Tasty food at a fair price, with generous portions. Enjoyed chips & salsa, of course, along with a large bean burrito that was stuffed with rice and veggies for $4. Win! Ordered to go, so not sure what dine in experience is like. Surprised this place doesn't have higher reviews, will update this review after dining in.

I very nearly didn't eat here at all because could not find the entrance and believed the place to be closed. I pulled into the lot, got out of my car and walked to the door, which was locked. Since moving down here I have noticed that it is frequently very difficult to determine if a business is open because everybody applies sun blocking films to their windows which causes it to appear from outside that the inside is dark. El Taqueria Azteza has taken the next step which is to apply a full wrap to all of their windows. On the positive side there is no doubt about what kind of place they are because the wrap has artwork which demonstrates this. On the negative one cannot see into the place. As mentioned above, I pulled on the door handle and it was locked. This was odd because the hours were clearly posted on this door and I was definitely there between the posted hours. I turned around and walked back to my car to try somewhere else. Just as I was about to get in, a man (who was probably a neighboring business owner) told me that there was a second door to the place. Sure enough, there was. I entered again and this time found myself in the dining area. I went to the counter where there was a woman looking at me. I suggested that perhaps they should put a sign on the first door about there being a second entrance (or unlock that door) and she dismissed both suggestions as a) there was a sign and nobody cared so they took it down and b) the locked door is too close to the kitchen and people would enter and walk into the kitchen (a possibility but also easily rectified). Whatever. I sat at the counter (because there were chairs there) and the woman told me that the counter was not for customer dining. She pointed out the tables and I sat at one. The actual food was quite good, once I finally got to eat it.

My wife and I eat here once every couple of weeks. The food is excellent. Service (as noted in other reviews) could be better but it's a small operation and they do a good take-out business so they are very busy in the kitchen/back room. I would highly recommend El Taqueria Azteza to anyone looking for very good, homemade Mexican food.

Best authentic Mexican food in the Cape. Period. The burritos are absolutely delicious and are worth a try. I keep returning to Azteca because the flavor is incomparable to other nearby restaurants. It has a friendly staff and is perfect to bring your family for some tasty food. Azteca is definitely a gem in Cape Coral and should be on your list for great Mexican food.

Closed. I have visited this location 2 times in last 2 months. Each a different day and different time. Both times is was closed. There was no signs indicating they were on vacation or what not. Doors were locked.

Food was very good here the second time I dropped in. From the guacamole to the salsa and tortillas. Rice and beans were good also. Chicken mole & carne asada sopes were super tasty. Service was prompt and friendly. Definitely will be back again. Ice cold beer $2.50 a bottle was a deal. Food prices were the lowest in Florida that I've seen for Mexican food so far.

We have been coming to this restaurant for almost 3 years and it is the highlight of my visit to Cape Coral. I was sad to read some of the reviews as we have come to love this restaurant. I have NEVER had bad service here. The beauty of this place is that it is family owned and operated and the woman who runs the show there is also the owner....her ex is the chef and the food is AMAZING!!!! True authentic flavorful Mexican food at an unbeatble price. I don't mind waiting a little if I know it's because they are busy preparing a FRESH REAL Mexican dish! The sopas are outrageous, the chicken mole is out of this world and I have NEVER had a bad meal here in three years! I would say we are there at least 6 times a year!!!

Finally we have made it back to our favourite Mexican Restaurant in Cape Coral. My girlfriend and I have been coming here for years and were disappointed to see the recent reviews... So we decided to check out our old haunt again and it was incredible as always, food was fresh and delicious! Everything from the salsas to the desserts are on point and very tasty!! I had the Guacamole (YUM!), Tacos, and a Chorizo Tostada (my favourite! Mmm!) not sure if the previous reviewers came on an off day, but as always for us was an incredible experience at El Azteca Taqueria. Well worth the 2082 Mile trip!!

I would love to give this place 4 stars but the service was sub-par and I ordered the burrito la mexicana and it was 90% rice a complete disappointment. The taste was great but for a $8 burrito there was probably an once of meat.

First time at this restaurant and it will be the last! Can't give the food a rating because we didn't get that far. The service is AWFUL folks, AWFUL!!!!

Oh how I love you El Azteca! We have been coming here for years and always make sure to stop by when we visit Florida. Fresh food and friendly service, don't miss it!

Walked in.. They had one server on the floor.. Nearly every table was filled.. No manager or any other employee in sight for that matter.. First thing I sit at the table and my pants catch on a piece of hardware that had been serving no purpose and they rip., server comes by after about 5 mins with a slight attitude and takes our drink order.. After 25 more minutes still no drinks or acknowledgment that they were on the way we left.. I will never get that 30 minutes of my life back and my jeans are also trash.. Thanks azteca.

I finally came here! I'm from Calif and was raised on Mexican food. I have to say this the best Mexican food I have ever had. Everything was fresh and good! I'll be back

That place was awful, $20 for 1 beer, 1 apple soda and some canned ball park cheese dip. If that's authentic Mexican food, I'll make it a point to never go to Mexico. They claim to have vegetarian options, that's no true at all. We will never return.

If one looks at my reviews her on Yelp, they are overwhelmingly positive. This place really deserves a poor one. It is as bad as can get. One star because the door was open. That earned this establishment the one star that yelp requires. Ironically, I drove to this business because they had good Yelp reviews. It was a bad experience. First, I cannot comment on the food as we never received any. We sat for 35 mins, and never ever received drinks. After waiting too long for the ONLY server, who obviously was unhappy being there, we placed a drink order. When she finally returned to the dining area, we cancelled them since none of the the other 5 tables we saw had received food in the 30 mins that we were present. I feel bad in a way for the server who was alone; But we saw no kitchen staff either. I am not sure what was happening here, but something was wrong. The tables were not clean, the place smelled of a toilet, there was food left at tables with flys. The only thing I can positive about this place, was that it was authentic in one way: the filth of a Mexican border town. Only a matter of time before it is closed?

Ok I'm being very lenient because the service was not very good but I have to say the tacos exceeds the service quality. Love the authentic style tacos made by the owner himself. This is a true gem when it comes to the food. I have wanted to go back for more since I left a couple days ago.

Love his place. I get the vegetarian burrito every time!! My husband loves the mole burrito. Consistently the best Mexican place in Cape Coral.

From the burritos to the tostadas everything here is excellent, especially the lengua tacos. You need to give this place a try

I have to agree with a lot of people in saying that El Azteca was for a long time the best Mexican restaurant in Cape Coral. Last few times I've been I found the sauces to be made way too far in advance, the menu lacking. I really hope they get their groove back because they used to rock.

If you are a true lover of authentic Mexican food then you need to try Azteca. This is the best Mexican food I've had in my life and I have yet to find a better place. I live in St. Pete and my boyfriend's family lives in Cape Coral. We crave this place and when we visit we always make sure to stop by for lunch or dinner. They even catered my boyfriend's brother's rehearsal dinner. I always get the chicken mole burrito. The pastor tacos are also amazing. Served simply with meat, radishes, cilantro and lime. The sopes are also a favorite. To top it off the owners are beyond nice and friendly. One of those places where you feel like part of the family.

This is the best Mexican place I've had in SW FL. The highlights are the excellent salsas (best I've ever had). The Chile Colorado is top notch as well. I would usually eat the tacos (beef/marinated pork/chicken). I do like the chicken tacos at the taquerias in LA better than El Azteca, but the steak tacos here and the Chile Colorado is amazing. I want their salsa verde & red salsa receipes (it is made fresh in the restaurant).

I think people should rate the food based on their quality, not by comparing to another restaurant's food. I have been here a few times, both for dine in and take out. The food is amazing! Their guacamole is made fresh and tastes wonderful with their crispy chips. Our favorite dish is the Nachos Tex-Mex. It has fresh vegetables, flank steak, and they give BIG portions. The burritos are huge too! If you like exotic cuts of meat, the cow tongue taco is tasty and definitely worth a buck and a half!

NOT AUTHENTIC. The chicken was boiled and not seasoned at all and so was the steak. The tomatoes were not at all ripe. Not one of our dinners were the way we ordered them (no tomatoes, with sour cream etc.) also I've never been to a Mexican restaurant where they didn't bring u out chips. Everything was completely bland. Don't waste your time or money if u are looking for true authentic Mexican food.

After reading the glowing reviews we couldn't wait to try El Azteca. Sorry to be a downer but you've got to be kidding. The tortilla chips ($3.50 for a small handfull) were stale and chewy, the salsas thin, watery and uninspiring, the portions small and the prices high. The only redeeming quality is the decor, but I came for the food. Definitely NOT the best Mexican food I've ever had.

I've been driving past this place for years it seems. I saw the sign and always noted that I needed to stop there. Well, I finally went in the other day and I was amazed. I tried a variety of different tacos served in the traditional way with onions and cilantro, and I also tried their sampler of salsas with tortilla chips. I then like to use the different salsas on the tacos. Everything was excellent, fresh and flavorful. Someone here mentioned Tacos El Tequila. Yes, they are very good, but I thought that this was a bit better.

I have to agree with all the reviewers who said this is the best, most authentic Mexican food in Cape Coral, and I'll say it's one of the best in SW Florida as well. And the hostess who helped me with ordering take-out food was as friendly and helpful as they come - traits I find all too uncommon in the restaurant industry today. It was a first time experience for us, but now we can't wait to go back. Thank you for providing an excellent food experience for my wife and me.

Simply the best Mexican food in all of Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Lee County! Jorge and Katia serve up the most authentic, delicious Mexican delights. The guacamole is the best I have ever had. The salsas (verde, roja and fresca) are addictive, as are the chile rellenos. The carnitas and mole enchiladas incredible. Jorge makes everything from scratch. He doesn't fry anything. YUM! YUM! YUM! Don't let the outside appearance deter you. They just opened a new, beautiful dining room. "Little Katia" will make you feel welcome!

Food was authentic, but cannot compare to Tacos El Tequilla on Pine Island in old albertsons / new Publix plaza. Service was very slow. The owners/servers are very nice, but doesn't cut it for me.

To those who rave about this place being the best authentic Mexican restaurant in the Cape, have you ever had authentic Mexican food? Because this place struggles to be authentic, in my opinion, of course. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in the area, I'd head across the bridge to Fort Myers and go to Taqueria Arandas. I have to blast them for their queso. I am a lover of queso, and nothing makes me happier than to go to a Mexican restaurant and fill myself almost to the brim with cheesy, queso-ey goodness. Good queso is hard to find, impossible to make at home, and when combined with a nice bowl of crispy tortilla chips, it is out of this world. It's honestly one of my favorite parts of eating Mexican food (does that make me unauthentic?). Without a single doubt in my mind, the queso at this place is out of a jar...it's not even Velveeta, which still would have been unacceptable, but probably a little closer to real cheese than the jarred stuff. I'm disturbed by queso out of the jar. Any cheese product that is able to remain near liquid at room temperature is not cheese. No kidding, it was bright orange with little bits of jalapeno in it (roasted jalapenos, per the description on the menu...roasted by who, Frito Lay? Tostitos?). The fact that we paid $4 for queso out of a jar chaps my hide. I would say that the most authentic thing on the menu is the probably the tacos, served with Cilantro and onions. I don't eat cilantro, but my boyfriend loves it. He got the Mexican tacos with slow roasted pork and said that they were very good. I tried a smidgen of the pork, and I'd have to agree, it was good. It was tender, it was flavorful, it was just a little bit spicy without being overpowering. The tacos are served with 2 different sauces...a verde sauce which was very good, and another orange-red sauce that i'm not familiar with. I didn't care for the orange sauce; it was very spicy and grainy but still managed to not have much flavor, if that makes any sense. I had the Poblano burrito, which is confusing because it's a chicken burrito and there is nary a sign of poblano in it whatsoever. Misnomers aside, it was pretty good...average, I guess I would say. The chicken could have used some seasoning. I elected to get the mole sauce on the side since mole varies so much from restaurant to restaurant. This mole was good. It wasn't too sweet, it had a good hint of spice, but still had that chocolately/barbecue flavor. I can't do too much mole, so it was nice to have it on the side to dip as I saw fit. The burrito was filled with plain chicken, rice, beans, and cheese, then topped with shredded lettuce, sour cream, and more cheese. The menu said it was topped with queso fresco, but in my experience queso fresco has a more crumbly appearance...this looked like mozzarella or white cheddar. I'm not saying it wasn't queso fresco, I'm just saying it didn't look the way I'm used to seeing it look at other Mexican restaurants. I felt that the pricing was very reasonable, excluding the cheese dip, of course. There are a lot of things on the menu for under $5. My boyfriend and I got out of there for $20, including a somewhat stingy tip since 15 minutes passed between when they brought out his first and second tacos. Not sure what the hold-up was, but we were the ONLY people eating in the restaurant at 7:30 at night. We did see a lot of people coming and going with take-out orders, so maybe they mistakenly sent his second taco out with one of them. At the end of the day, this definitely wasn't the worst Mexican restaurant that I've ever eaten at, but it just wasn't good enough for me to give it a second visit, especially given the disappointing queso dip.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
